Naqvi travelled to Peshawar after meeting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Lahore and holding a news conference. Soon after arriving in the provincial capital, he met Governor Kundi for discussions on the prevailing situation and security affairs.
During his news conference, Naqvi claimed that the government and PTI negotiators had reached agreement on 99 percent of the issues during talks held at Parliament House in Islamabad. However, he alleged that KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi rejected the consensus reached during the negotiations.
Naqvi said the agreed draft had been presented to the president, but upon his return he learned that major changes had been made to the document. He claimed PTI leadership had finalised the draft four times, but changes were subsequently made to it on each occasion.
The interior minister questioned why Afridi did not participate directly in the negotiations if he was to make the final decisions.
Naqvi said there would now be no further negotiations, arguing that talks were no longer necessary. He also stated that, in his view, a chief minister who does not take steps to combat terrorism should not remain in office.
He further warned that a situation similar to the May 9 unrest would not be allowed to occur again and said the government would not allow an attack or march on Islamabad.
