According to a report by the BBC, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro travelled to the US on Tuesday following his defeat in Sunday’s presidential election by left-wing leader and re-elected President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Sources say he has also met his brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro, in Florida.

The route Flavio took to leave Brazil and his plans for a possible long-term stay in the US remain unclear. Brazilian federal police had contacted Argentine authorities to help trace his possible departure.

Argentine officials inspected a private aircraft and its documents at the airport in the border city of Puerto Iguazú. However, they said the flight plan did not mention any member of the Bolsonaro family.

Flavio Bolsonaro is also under investigation over allegations of corruption and money laundering, which he denies. Brazil’s Supreme Court had ordered him to hand over his travel documents, but he did not comply with the order, according to the report.

President Lula commented on his political rival’s presence in the US, saying that those with nothing to hide had no reason to fear.

Meanwhile, the US State Department told the BBC that visas would be issued to Flavio Bolsonaro and his family. However, the circumstances surrounding his departure from Brazil and arrival in the US remain unclear.
