The directive was issued during a high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister to review measures for facilitating export-oriented SMEs.

Shehbaz Sharif made it clear that no bank would be allowed to deviate from the government's subsidised financing scheme for SMEs and exporters.

He said the government would extend all possible support to help small businesses expand, improve productivity, develop skills and strengthen their competitiveness.

The prime minister also directed authorities to improve accreditation standards, expand laboratory facilities and simplify regulatory procedures for exporters. He called for establishing modern laboratories to provide services closer to businesses.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, several federal ministers, Adviser to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar, State Bank Governor Jameel Ahmad and other senior officials.

Participants were briefed on consultations with SME representatives, during which businesses highlighted challenges relating to taxation, refunds, provincial levies, accreditation, logistics, payments and access to financing.

According to the briefing, Pakistan has approximately 17,000 export-linked SMEs. More than 10,000 applications have been received since the State Bank of Pakistan launched an online portal on November 1 to facilitate access to loans for the SME sector.

The government has allocated Rs300 billion for SMEs and new exporters under the financing scheme, while Rs350 billion has been earmarked this year for the Long-Term Financing Facility (LTFF).

The meeting was also informed that special measures were being taken to increase Pakistani exports to African countries.
