The attackers, reportedly dressed in military-style uniforms, targeted the villages of Dnkara, Gidan Zana, Sabon Gida and Masaka in the Borgu Local Government Area after evening prayers.

Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said authorities suspect the attackers were armed criminal groups involved in kidnapping for ransom and other crimes across the country.

Residents said the attackers entered Dnkara after prayers, rounded up villagers and took them towards nearby forests before moving on to other settlements.

Local lawmaker Jafar Muhammad Shettima of Borgu also confirmed the attacks.

The incidents come amid growing activity by armed groups in the remote Borgu area, which borders Nigeria’s Kebbi and Kwara states as well as neighbouring Benin.

Earlier this month, police said 145 people abducted from four villages in Borgu had been rescued as part of a wider security operation that recovered a total of 308 kidnapped people, including more than 160 abducted from neighbouring Kwara State.

The latest attacks have once again highlighted the worsening security situation in Niger State and north-central Nigeria, where armed groups exploit remote forests and weak security infrastructure to carry out raids and kidnappings for ransom.
