No progress sans reforms in FBR & power sector: PM

Says ministries and departments should go for digitization and paperless working environment to ensure good governance.

ISLAMABAD: While electricity tariffs are going up without any relief to the inflation-hit consumers, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said reforms in power sector and the Federal Board of Revenue were his government’s top priorities for development in the country.

He stated this while chairing a meeting of the cabinet. He said that it would be a wishful thinking to increase exports without reducing the cost of production especially the utilization of electricity in the industrial and agriculture sectors.

He was of the view that the reform in the FBR was imperative in order to enhance tax collection and increase the revenue to be utilized on development of the country. He also said that digitization was crucial to plug loopholes and check corruption and misuse of resources and ensure accountability.

He said that in order to ensure good governance ministries and departments should go for digitization and put in place paperless working environment.

He said that he was ready to offer all-out support and resources for departments concerned to introduce and implement reforms to bring a turnaround in their working.

The prime minister claimed that the initiatives launched by his government had started giving positive results and the economy was stabilizing.
