Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews, Trump was asked whether he had abandoned efforts to negotiate with Iran. He replied that no talks were currently taking place but suggested that the situation would move forward and an outcome could emerge soon.

Trump said many people believed progress on the issue would come after the US midterm elections, adding that it remained to be seen what would happen next.

Describing US actions against Iran as extraordinary, Trump claimed that Washington had achieved “surprising results” in dealing with Tehran. He also referred to the ongoing war as a “small conflict.”

His remarks did not clarify what steps the United States would take next to end the conflict or whether any formal contacts were underway to resume negotiations.
