MRXICO CITY: Mexico’s Ministry of Defense has confirmed that notorious cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” has died following a military operation in the western state of Jalisco.

According to officials, El Mencho was critically injured during an exchange of fire with security forces and later succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Mexico City.

El Mencho headed the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which in recent years grew into a major global drug trafficking network.

The group had been engaged in a violent rivalry with the Sinaloa Cartel, previously led by imprisoned drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

Following news of his death, violent unrest erupted across several Mexican states. Vehicles were set ablaze, armed groups blocked highways, and security forces were placed on high alert.

Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro urged residents to remain indoors as a precaution. U.S. authorities also issued a security alert amid fears of escalating violence.

The operation comes amid reported pressure from the administration of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, with calls from U.S. President Donald Trump for stricter action against drug trafficking networks.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau described the development as a significant step for regional security.

Due to security concerns, Air Canada has temporarily suspended flights to the coastal city of Puerto Vallarta.
