SRINAGAR: The newly-elected assembly of occupied Jammu and Kashmir at its first session has demanded the restoration of the special status of the disputed territory.

A resolution presented by deputy chief minister and National Conference leader Sarinder Singh Chaudhry calling for the restoration of Article 370 of the Indian constitution was passed by the house.

When the resolution was put to voting by Speaker Abdur Rahim, all the members except those belonging to the BJP of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi voted for it.

The Article 370 of the Indian constitution gave special status to the occupied Jammu and Kashmir but the Modi government on August 5, 2019, unilaterally abolished it.

Kashmiri people as well as the government of Pakistan have rejected the Indian move and said that India cannot take any unilateral decision on Kashmir which was still a disputed territory on the agenda of the UN Security Council.
