UNITED NATIONS: The Permanent Representatives of the OIC Core Group on Islamophobia met with Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, at UN Headquarters today.
Mr. Miguel Angel Moratinos, UN Special Envoy on Islamophobia and High Representative of the UN Alliance of Civilisations, was also present at the meeting.
During the interaction, the OIC Core Group exchanged views with the UNGA President on the upcoming commemoration of the UN International Day to Combat Islamophobia on 15 March 2026.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, said that the General Assembly, through Resolution 76/254, unanimously proclaimed 15 March as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
He recalled that the first commemoration was held in 2023 under Pakistan’s chairmanship of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, followed by commemorations in 2024 and 2025.
Ambassador Asim said that the International Day holds immense significance for the OIC and symbolizes global solidarity in combating Islamophobia. He also appreciated the role of the UN Special Envoy on Islamophobia in combating Islamophobia.
