Opposition Demands New Chief Election Commissioner

ISLAMABAD: The opposition alliance has demanded the appointment of a new chief election commissioner and called for an investigation into alleged rigging during the February 2024 elections.

The demand was made during a two-day National Consultative Conference held in Islamabad with a joint statement issued at the conclusion of the conference.

The statement said democracy rests on the foundation of transparent elections, and it called for the investigation of alleged irregularities in the February 2024 elections. The opposition leaders stressed that the credibility of the electoral process is crucial for the future of Pakistan’s democracy.

“We demand the appointment of a new Chief Election Commissioner,” the statement read, underscoring the need for an impartial and credible figure to lead the Election Commission of Pakistan. The statement further called for the holding of new, free, and fair elections to ensure the legitimacy of the democratic process.

The opposition’s move comes in the wake of growing concerns over the transparency of recent elections, with political parties and civil society groups urging for reforms to safeguard electoral integrity in the country.

The statement concluded by reiterating the opposition’s commitment to ensuring that future elections are conducted in a transparent and accountable manner, free from any manipulation or irregularities.
