The wife of former president of Syria Bashar Al-Assad has moved a court in Moscow, seeking divorce from her husband after he along with his family fled to Russia following the takeover of his country by rebel forces about two weeks ago.

According to Turkish media reports, Asma Assad, who is also a British national, is not happy in Moscow and wants to return to London and live there with her mother.

Her mother has reportedly also approached a court in London to ensure that Asma does not face any issue while returning to England. However, she has been told that Asma would face cases of corruption back in England and would have to seek divorce from the former Syrian president.

Asma is the daughter of parents who were British nationals of Syrian origin. She met Assad when he was pursuing a law degree in England and married him after the death of his father Hafiz Al-Assad in 2020. The couple have two sons and a daughter.

In May 2024, the Syrian media had reported that 48-year-old Asma had been diagnosed with leukemia.

Asma and her mother are worried that proper treatment for her disease may not be possible under the current situation in Moscow.
