MURREE: Over 20 buildings illegally constructed in the resort town of Murree were demolished during an ongoing campaign against encroachments.
District administration officials said that the drive had been launched on the direction of caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
The illegal structures that were razed included hotels, restaurants and shopping plazas. These structures were demolished by the staff of concerned departments in the presence of police and district administration officials.
The structures were located in Jicka Gali, Masiari, Murree town, the Mall and Lower Toppa.
Sources say that the illegal constructions were made by political figures during the last many decades despite a ban imposed hy the government.
A few years ago, the Supreme Court of Pakistan took notice and ordered the government to demolish all illegal buildings in Murree. However, new buildings were constructed in the area by influential people.
Irregular construction activity has created a mess and marred the beauty of the area besides causing traffic gridlock in the hilly town.
