WASHINGTON: Since the taking over by President Donald Trump on January 20, the US has rounded up and deported over 7,000 illegal immigrants, including some Pakistanis, according to media reports.
The Department of Homeland Security said it had started implementing President Trump’s executive order to crack down on illegal immigrants. The Department said that 7,300 illegal immigrants were arrested and deported in Trump’s first week in office.
Most of those arrested were involved in violent crimes. According to reports, some Pakistanis living illegally in the United States were also arrested for illegally crossing the US border. Operations have been carried out in various cities including Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles and New Orleans.
According to the Department, 956 illegal immigrants were arrested on January 27 alone. Raids have also been carried out in schools and churches. Fearing arrest, some illegal immigrants have stopped going to work and sending their children to school.
The Department of Homeland Security said the number of arrests can be gauged from the fact that only 310 people were arrested during President Biden’s last year in office in 2024.
The White House press secretary told a briefing that 97 percent of the people who were deported faced eviction during the Biden era but action was not taken against them. The law was being violated during the Biden era Which is no longer the case.
According to media reports, 11 million immigrants are living in the United States without legal status, and 1.4 million immigrants without legal status have been given deportation orders.
More than 0.65 million non-citizens have criminal background.
President Donald Trump took office on January 20 and announced the expulsion of illegal immigrants.
