UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has stressed the need for allowing the reinvestment of frozen assets of Libya in order to preserve its values and utilize it for the benefit of the people of the country.
“The assets freeze measures stipulated in the UNSC resolution are not meant to be punitive in nature, as their main objective is to protect the assets for the benefit of the Libyan people at a later stage,” said Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations Ambassador Munir Akram, in an explanation of the vote in the Security Council on Thursday.
He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to Libya’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity.
The ambassador said that his country had voted in favour of the resolution related to the renewal of Libya’s sanctions regime 1970 (2011).
“We are happy that the recommendations of the Panel of Experts pertaining to the investment of Libyan frozen assets have been endorsed in the adopted resolution.”
The envoy said that the Security Council should send a message of solidarity to the Libyan people. The process for political reconciliation should offer peace dividends to all citizens and focus on securing an equitable distribution of national resources, he added.
He said that lasting peace and stability in Libya can be achieved by holding free, fair, and transparent presidential and parliamentary elections.
“Pakistan will continue to support Libya, and the Libyan people will find us a steadfast partner in their march towards prosperity and development.”
