ISLAMABAD: Pakistan emerged as the world’s largest importer of solar panels in 2024, according to a report by a UK-based energy think-tank.
Despite the absence of any major national legislation or influx of foreign investment, the country imported 17 gigawatts (GW) worth of solar panels in 2024 alone – double the imports recorded in 2023.
The report termed the surge “astonishing,” especially as it was not part of any centralized government initiative. Instead, the demand has been driven almost entirely by individual consumers, small businesses, and commercial entities seeking a cheaper and more reliable alternative to the expensive and erratic national power supply.
Experts say the transition to solar energy is becoming a survival strategy for many, as poor planning and unreliable supply continue to push consumers away from the national grid.
The volume of imports in 2024 alone equals nearly half of the country’s total electricity demand, indicating a fundamental shift in Pakistan’s energy landscape.
While net metering has been allowed and import restrictions eased, most solar installations are reportedly off-grid. This means they are not reflected in the national power statistics, even though they are significantly reducing dependency on the state-run grid.
Experts warn that unless the existing power infrastructure is upgraded and modernized, the national grid will struggle to keep up with this rapidly changing energy dynamic.
