ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended congratulations to the nation on the 27th anniversary of Pakistan’s nuclear tests, commemorated annually as Youm-e-Takbeer.

Today, the country observes Youm-e-Takbeer with national pride, marking 27 years since Pakistan emerged as the world’s seventh nuclear power. Special events and ceremonies are being held across the country, and a public holiday has been declared in observance of the day.

On May 28, 1998, under the leadership of then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan conducted five successful nuclear tests in the Chagai district of Balochistan, in response to India’s nuclear tests earlier that month. The tests were seen as a significant milestone in Pakistan’s defense and a strong message affirming the nation’s sovereignty and security.

In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan celebrates Youm-e-Takbeer this year at a particularly significant and historic juncture. Referring to recent tensions with India, he stated, “By the grace of Allah, Pakistan emerged victorious in the battle of truth from May 6 to May 10. This clear victory has added to the joy of Youm-e-Takbeer for our nation.”

The Prime Minister further praised Nawaz Sharif for his bold leadership in 1998, resisting international pressure, economic sanctions, and threats to ensure Pakistan’s security. “Nawaz Sharif made the country’s geographical boundaries invincible by conducting six nuclear tests. He truly represented the will and aspirations of the nation,” he said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif added that the echo of “Allahu Akbar” from the mountains of Chagai still resonates as a symbol of the nation’s commitment to its defense. “This glorious tradition has once again been echoed by the nation in response to India’s recent unprovoked aggression,” he said.

President Asif Ali Zardari also paid tribute to the scientists, armed forces, and national leadership behind the successful nuclear program, reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering resolve to safeguard its independence and territorial integrity.
