Pakistan Desirous of Joining BRICS, Alternative Payment Systems

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has expressed its interest in joining the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) group and is considering the implementation of an alternative payment system to facilitate its integration into the global economic framework.

Federal Finance Minister Mohammad Aurangzeb stated that Pakistan seeks to play a positive and constructive role within BRICS, with a focus on boosting economic diplomacy, trade, and investment. He said Islamabad is committed to strengthening regional connectivity and promoting sustainable investments. The government’s policy aims to position Pakistan as a significant player in the global economy.

In an interview with Azerbaijani and Russian media, Aurangzeb highlighted the importance of cooperation in the digital economy, fintech, artificial intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity for fostering North-South partnerships. He stressed the need for new trade and transport corridors as essential components for Pakistan’s economic growth. The minister also provided updates on ongoing discussions between Pakistan and Russia regarding energy, mineral resources, and the potential establishment of a steel plant. He pointed out that economic stability is critical to ensuring investor confidence in the country.

Aurangzeb signaled that Pakistan is working on regulating the digital currency and crypto sector, with efforts underway to establish a *Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority*. He emphasized the importance of developing legal frameworks that align with global standards to ensure transparency and security in the use of digital assets.
