The understanding was reached during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s talks with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov in Bishkek on Wednesday.

Speaking at a joint press stakeout, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the two countries would develop a comprehensive plan of practical measures to gradually increase bilateral trade, improve trade mechanisms, promote joint investment projects, strengthen industrial cooperation and expand direct business-to-business contacts.

He said Pakistan welcomed greater engagement between Pakistani businesses and financial institutions and their Kyrgyz counterparts to advance the shared vision of enhanced bilateral economic cooperation.

The prime minister said connectivity remained central to closer economic integration between South and Central Asia. He welcomed the signing of an agreement on transit trade, saying it would facilitate commerce, improve logistics and create new opportunities for regional connectivity.

Energy cooperation was also identified as an important pillar of the bilateral partnership. Shehbaz Sharif said both sides had reaffirmed the importance of timely implementation of the CASA-1000 project and welcomed the establishment of a joint working group to develop practical cooperation in electricity, hydropower, renewable energy, energy infrastructure and modern technology.

He expressed satisfaction over expanding cooperation in education, science and technology, health, culture and tourism, and welcomed the establishment of sister-city relations between Lahore and Osh.

Security and defence cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions. The prime minister said both countries had reaffirmed their resolve to strengthen cooperation in combating terrorism, extremism and other contemporary threats.

The two sides also agreed to deepen cooperation on environmental and climate-related issues.

Japarov said the economy should remain one of the main pillars of the Kyrgyz-Pakistani partnership. He said both countries had agreed to take systematic steps to increase bilateral trade, expand the range of traded goods and attract investment.

He said the two sides were ready to implement joint projects in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, energy, light industry, tourism, the digital economy, virtual assets and other areas.

The Kyrgyz president said Pakistan’s seaports provided Kyrgyzstan with a natural route to South Asian markets and, beyond them, to global trade routes.
