Speaking to a private news channel, Asim Iftikhar, who is currently Pakistan's Permanent Representative to UN, said the situation in the Middle East was moving in a dangerously negative direction and Pakistan was conscious of the need to play a more effective role in addressing the crisis.
He said Pakistan was pursuing diplomatic efforts to help end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and wanted a peaceful resolution in accordance with international law and the principles of the United Nations.
The foreign secretary said Pakistan was seeking an immediate ceasefire, de-escalation of tensions and the return of the parties to the negotiating table.
He noted that the UN Security Council Charter was fundamentally aimed at resolving disputes through dialogue and negotiations rather than war.
Asim Iftikhar said Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye were the three countries party to the Makkah Pact and that Pakistan was taking on additional responsibility under the agreement.
He said Pakistan had been among the countries playing a leading role in efforts to reduce tensions and promote peace during the conflict between Iran and the United States.
The foreign secretary stressed that disputes, including those involving Palestine and Kashmir, should be resolved in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
He also rejected the impression that the United Nations was failing to play its role in promoting global peace, saying the organisation continued to have an important role in addressing international conflicts.
