Pakistan urges action against fake news by occupying states

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has urged the United Nations General Assembly’s Fourth Committee to take action against occupying states who are spreading fake news in occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine.

The Fourth Committee is mandated with special political and decolonization matters.

Speaking at the meeting of the committee Pakistani delegate Amanat Ali said that it was deplorable that the occupying states were using disinformation to suppress the people’s voices in Kashmir and Palestine.

“The harmful impact of fake news and disinformation is magnified when states employ these tactics in situations of foreign occupation to suppress the voices of people, denied basic freedoms, including the UN-sanctioned right to self-determination,” he stressed.

He called for a sustained communications campaign by the Department of Global Communications (GDC) in collaboration with member states to highlight the UN’s achievements and contributions.
