NEW YORK: Pakistan urged decisive UN action on Kashmir, terrorism, and climate justice during a high-level meeting in New York.
Chairman Senate Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani pressed for stronger multilateral cooperation in talks with UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock on the sidelines of the IPU Parliamentary Hearing 2026.
Mr Gilani met UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock in New York. He led a high-level parliamentary delegation during the Annual IPU Parliamentary Hearing 2026 at UN Headquarters. Gilani reaffirmed Pakistan’s principled support for the United Nations as the cornerstone of multilateral cooperation.
He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful dispute resolution and regional stability. Moreover, he stressed that the United Nations must uphold its Charter and enforce its resolutions. He urged stronger collective action to address mounting global crises.
He stated that the multilateral system faces increasing strain due to persistent violations of international law. Therefore, he called for renewed political will to protect the credibility of global institutions.
Kashmir Dispute and Regional Stability
Gilani described the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute as essential for lasting peace in South Asia.
He urged implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions without further delay. He warned that unresolved disputes continue to fuel instability across the region.
He linked durable peace directly to compliance with international commitments. Furthermore, he criticized India’s unilateral decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance. He called the move unlawful and a clear violation of treaty obligations.
He argued that the action undermines established principles of customary international law. Consequently, he warned that such steps erode trust between neighboring states. He stated that the suspension threatens the lives and livelihoods of over 240 million Pakistanis.
He emphasized that water security demands cooperation, especially amid climate stress. He cautioned that unilateral actions set dangerous global precedents. Therefore, he urged strict respect for international agreements.
Terrorism and Regional Security Concerns
Gilani also highlighted the terrorist threats confronting Pakistan. He stated that groups including TTP, BLA, Al-Qaeda, and ISIL-K operate from Afghan territory. He asserted that these organizations target Pakistan with impunity.
He urged stronger international cooperation to counter cross-border terrorism. In addition, he emphasized Pakistan’s sacrifices in the global fight against terrorism. He reiterated the Pakistani people’s strong support for the UN’s peace and security mandate.
He called for unified global efforts to eliminate extremist networks. He stressed that collective security remains a shared international responsibility.
Climate Change and Global Governance Challenges
Gilani warned that overlapping global crises threaten international stability. He pointed to the erosion of adherence to international legal frameworks. He cautioned that weakening respect for global norms undermines the international order.
Therefore, he urged member states to recommit to the UN Charter. He also underscored Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change. He noted that Pakistan ranks among the countries most severely affected by climate impacts.
He called for climate justice and stronger international cooperation. He stressed that the United Nations offers an indispensable platform for coordinated action.
UNGA President Responds
UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock expressed condolences over recent terrorist incidents in Pakistan. She affirmed that combating terrorism serves the interests of all nations. She welcomed the Pakistani delegation’s active participation in the IPU Annual Hearing. She praised Pakistan’s constructive role within the United Nations.
This meeting marked her first engagement with visiting high-level parliamentary delegations. Senators Saleem Mandviwala, Farooq H. Naek, Muhammad Abdul Qadir, and Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari attended the session.
The discussions underscored Pakistan’s push for diplomatic engagement at the highest multilateral level. They also reinforced calls for action on Kashmir, terrorism, climate change, and global governance reform.
