President Asif Ali Zardari announced the emergency on October 11, and the parliamentary process for its constitutional endorsement is now underway.

On Wednesday, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry presented resolutions under Article 232 of the Constitution in both houses, seeking parliamentary endorsement of the emergency.

The National Assembly, chaired by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, held an extended debate lasting approximately four hours before approving the resolution by a majority vote.

The government defended the move by citing security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while opposition lawmakers strongly opposed the decision, describing it as unconstitutional and staging protests and slogan-chanting inside the house.

The regular question hour was postponed to accommodate the debate. Despite opposition protests, the resolution was passed by a majority.

Following approval by the National Assembly, the resolution was presented in the Senate, where government and opposition members exchanged heated remarks.

The proceedings became tense as lawmakers raised slogans against the move. Opposition members subsequently staged a walkout.

Despite the protest, the Senate also approved the resolution by a majority vote, endorsing the emergency imposed under Article 232.

With both houses having approved the emergency-related resolutions, Parliament is due to meet in a joint session today to consider the next step concerning Governor’s Rule in the province.
