PIA flights disrupted as PSO suspends fuel supply

At least 14 flights affected after national flag carrier fails to make payments.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan State Oil has suspended supply of fuel to the PIA causing disruptions in its flight schedule across the country.

A spokesman for the national flag carrier confirmed the suspension of at least 14 flights within the country on Sunday.

Sources said the PSO had refused to supply fuel to the PIA planes at Sukkur, Multan and Gilgit airports.

The spokesperson said two-way flights on Karachi-Islamabad and Islamabad-Gilgit routes had to be suspended due to unavailability of fuel.

The sources said that the PIA had to pay an amount of Rs650 million to the PSO and the cash-starved national flag carrier had sought special grant from the government to clear the dues.

The PIA has been in dire straits and facing hardship to meet its other expenses, including payment of salaries to its staff, and to come out of the crisis it needs at least Rs7 billion.

On the other hand, due to suspension of flights by the PIA, private airliners have increased their fares by taking advantage of the situation.
