KARACHI: Renowned businessman Arif Habib has reiterated his commitment to transforming Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) into a profitable airline, stating that employee retention will be strictly based on performance.
Speaking to the media during the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Inter-Schools Final at Naya Nazimabad, Habib said that making PIA financially viable is the top priority. He emphasized that employees who deliver results will continue with the national carrier, while performance will determine job security.
Habib noted that PIA’s workforce would be given protection and support, recalling that the airline once ranked among the world’s top carriers largely due to its employees’ dedication. However, he made it clear that future employment would depend on merit and performance.
He also clarified that under the existing agreement, PIA’s name cannot be changed. Highlighting the airline’s potential market, Habib said that approximately 14 million Pakistanis live abroad, and when combined with their families in Pakistan, more than 70 million people are connected to overseas travel.
“Our effort will be to encourage Pakistanis to travel through PIA,” he said, adding that the airline enjoys a preferential position in operations related to Hajj and Umrah.
Habib further stated that promoting sports within PIA, similar to initiatives at Naya Nazimabad, remains a priority, though the revival of sports activities within the airline will take time.
The event was also attended by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who distributed prizes to participants, while Pakistan Test cricket captain Shan Masood was also present.
