ISLAMABAD: The plain areas of Pakistan are under the grip of a heatwave with the Met Office saying the temperature will further rise in a couple of days.
However, partly cloudy weather with rain-wind and thunderstorm is expected in upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and adjoining hilly areas during evening and nigh, it added.
After the unprecedented wet spell in most of the country in late winter, the country is facing a prolonged dry spell.
As the temperature continue to rise, timings of schools were shortened in Punjab where educational institutions will be closed for summer vacations from June 1 to August 14.
On the other hand, power outages have brought miseries to people in Sindh and Balochistan as well as parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakthunkhwa. Major cities were without electricity for more than 12 hours a day.
The Met Office said that the weather will remain dry and hot for at least over a week. In Punjab and Sindh heavy rainfall is expected from the middle of June when monsoon season will start.
