ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday extended deep appreciation to the outgoing European Union Ambassador to Pakistan Riina Kionka for her outstanding contributions to strengthening Pakistan-EU relations during her tenure.

In a farewell meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office, the prime minister commended Ambassador Kionka’s diplomatic leadership, her commitment to meaningful engagement, and her instrumental role in advancing cooperation between Pakistan and the European Union across multiple sectors.

He specifically acknowledged her efforts during the 2022 floods, when the EU extended critical humanitarian support to Pakistan. “Your support during one of our most difficult times will always be remembered with gratitude,” the prime minister said, highlighting her role in mobilizing EU solidarity and assistance.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the GSP Plus scheme, describing it as a “mutually beneficial framework” that has strengthened economic ties and opened new avenues for trade and investment.

Describing the EU as one of Pakistan’s largest and most valued trading partners, Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed his desire to continue building on this strong foundation. He also conveyed his good wishes to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and expressed hope for a meeting at a suitable time.

Ambassador Riina Kionka, in turn, thanked the Prime Minister and the Government of Pakistan for their consistent cooperation and support during her diplomatic assignment. She expressed confidence in the future of Pakistan-EU relations and pledged to continue championing closer ties from her next posting in Brussels.

“I will carry with me the warmth and goodwill of the people of Pakistan,” she said, reaffirming the EU’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Pakistan.
