Police Detain Imran Khan’s Sisters Near Adiala Jail

RAWALPINDI: Police on Tuesday took into custody Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s sisters, Aleema Khan and Noreen Niazi, at Dahgal checkpoint near Adiala Jail.

Police later transported them towards Chakri Interchange, releasing nine PTI workers who had been detained alongside them. The sisters had staged a sit-in at the checkpoint to protest being denied a meeting with the incarcerated PTI leader.

Earlier, police officials had requested Aleema Khan and Noreen Niazi to leave the area. Before being taken into custody, Aleema Khan told reporters near Adiala Jail that no requirements for an open trial were being met, and alleged that the authorities did not want to grant this relief to Imran Khan because “then they would have to free everyone.”

She said the current government was acting out of fear and that she and her sister had come to meet Imran Khan in prison but were stopped about two kilometres from the jail.
