Power consumers to get relief, claims govt
PM Sharif orders extension in due date of July bills as companies accused of overbilling.
ISLAMABAD: Increasing power tariffs every month and imposing taxes upon taxes, the government has now started claiming that it was working hard to provide relief to the consumers.
The so-called relief in the eyes of the rulers is an extension of the due date for payment of power bills for July. The prime minister announced that the consumers would have 10 more days to pay their bills.
On the other hand, finance minister Muhammad Aurangzeb Khan said that the government would go ahead with its plan to stabilize the economy, in other words to follow the dictation of the IMF to impose more and more taxes on the masses without cutting the expenses on the luxuries of the rulers.
The minister for water and power, in the meanwhile, also claimed in an ambiguous way that the government was working to reform the power sector to provide relief to the masses.
Power theft has been a major factor in burdening the bill-paying consumers with the load of the losses from electricity being stolen in connivance with WAPDA officials. The losses worth billions of rupees are received by overbilling the consumers.
In the latest instance, power distribution companies have been found overbilling the consumers but the government is not taking any action to fix the issue.
