ISLAMABAD: Minister for Power Division Owais Ahmad Khan Laghari has expressed the fear that power tariffs would continue rising for the next 10 years.
Speaking at an event organized by a think tank, the minister said that the tariff increase would remain plugging the economy as well as domestic consumers because the demand would be rising in the country. The minister predicted that there would be 2.8pc increase in the demand of power per year for the coming at least 10 years.
About import of electricity to contain the rising demand, he said that its cost cannot be afforded. He said that CASA power import from Central Asia would be uneconomical and it would be in the interest of Pakistan if the infrastructure in Afghanistan remained undeveloped to complete the CASA project.
He said we were unable even to change the tariffs of the independent power producers, and he was thankful to the IPPs and some of them voluntarily sacrificed their profit for the consumers and agreed to change the terms of the agreement.
