President calls urgent meeting to discuss AJK protests

Masses launch long march from different towns to state capital against taxes and rising power tariffs.

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has called an urgent meeting today to discuss the situation in Azad Kashmir where people have launched protests against taxes and rising power tariffs. 

The masses have launched rallies from different towns to state capital and clashed with police who tried to stop them. A police officer lost his life while scores of people were also injured.

On the call of the Awami Action Committee, the local people observed strikes and protests in different areas of the state for the second consecutive day on Saturday and announced to continue the protest and long marches to Muzaffarabad.

Taking notice of the situation, President Zardari called the meeting of different departments and stakeholders and asked them to come with proposals to resolve the issue.

Officials said that president would be briefed about the issues and steps for their solution. The representatives of the AJK government will also attend the meeting along with the officials of WAPDA.
