Presidential reference filed in the SC for holding Senate election through show of hands

After the approval of President Dr. Arif Alvi, a reference has been filed in the Supreme Court for holding the Senate election through show of hands. The reference seeks the opinion of the Supreme Court on the issue of holding Senate elections through open ballot.

The President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi, on the suggestion of the Prime Minister, approved the sending of the reference to the Supreme Court under Article 186 of the Constitution.

The reference states that secret ballot in the Senate election uses black money in the sale and purchase of members, which raises questions about the transparency of the Senate election. The holding of Senate elections under open ballot will bring transparency in the electoral process.

However, the Supreme Court should give its opinion on important constitutional points. The federal cabinet had on December 15 approved the Supreme Court’s opinion on the Senate election open ballot issue.
