Prisoners escape after beating guards in Chaman, one killed
Many prisoners were involved in serious cases, say authorities.
CHAMAN: Several inmates escaped the prison in Balochistan’s Chaman after overpowering guards when they were allowed out of cells for Fajr prayers in the wee hours of Thursday.
They also fired shots, however, there were no reports of casualties among the prison officials, but at least one inmate was killed in the retaliatory fire.
Many prisoners involved in serious cases have managed to escape from the jail.
According to the police, while leaving the barracks for Eid prayers, the prisoners grabbed the gun from a prison guard and opened fire on the policemen.
The barrack in-charge said that accused involved in murder and other serious crimes were imprisoned in barrack No. 4.
When the inmates of barrack 4 were taken out to pray, they all attacked the guards, all of a sudden.
According to the prison authorities, the prisoners snatched an AK-47 Kalashnikov from an officer standing outside the main gate and opened fire.
One prisoner was killed and two others were injured in the retaliatory firing by the police.
A search operation is underway in the area to arrest the escaped prisoners.
