PESHAWAR: The Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUJ) and Peshawar Press Club jointly held a protest demonstration on Monday outside the Peshawar Press Club, condemning the brutal murder of journalist Hassan Zaib in Nowshera.
The protesters demanded the government arrest the culprits responsible for this heinous act.
Led by KhUJ President Nasir Hussain, Vice President Abdul Basir, General Secretary Imran Yousafzai, and Peshawar Press Club President Arshad Aziz Malik and General Secretary Irfan Musazai, the protest drew a large number of working journalists from both print and electronic media.
The protesters carried placards and banners with slogans denouncing the killing of Hassan Zaib and demanding justice. They vocally condemned the targeted killing of journalists and criticized the government’s failure to protect media personnel and bring the culprits to justice.
Addressing the protesters, Peshawar Press Club President Arshad Aziz Malik, General Secretary Irfan Musazai, KhUJ President Nasir Hussain and General Secretary Imran Yousufzai, senior journalist Imran Yousufzai stated that both the federal and provincial governments had failed to safeguard journalists.
President Arshad Aziz Malik demanded the authorities arrest the suspects at the earliest, noting that three journalists have been killed in the last two months, which is alarming.
The protesters urged the government to take its constitutional responsibility seriously and ensure the protection of journalists’ lives. They demanded the formation of a Judicial Commission to investigate the killing of journalists in the province, expose the culprits, and ensure they are punished in court.
The journalists warned that if their demand was not met within a week, they will escalate the protests.
