PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly witnessed intense protests on Friday as government members staged demonstrations inside and outside the assembly hall against a recent judicial verdict.

Lawmakers chanted slogans, including “Release him, release him, release Imran!”, expressing their discontent with the ruling.

The assembly session, already delayed by over two hours, was marked by strong criticism of the judiciary from both government and opposition members.

Former Speaker Mushtaq Ghani defended the PTI founder, stating that despite introducing initiatives like the Sehat Card and Al-Qadir University, he was being unfairly punished.

Government MPA Pir Masoor warned that public trust in the judiciary was eroding, calling for a counter-strategy against the verdict.

MPA Akbar Ayub labeled the ruling as a “joke,” alleging that the judiciary was under external pressure.

Opposition Leader Ahmed Karim Kundi criticized the double standards, stating that those protesting today had previously supported military courts.

JUI-F MPA Maulana Lutfur Rahman urged lawmakers to strengthen parliamentary traditions instead of weakening democracy.

Provincial Minister for Livestock Fazal Hakim accused authorities of making decisions based on personal interests rather than constitutional principles.

Law Minister Aftab Alam claimed that accountability was selectively applied, arguing that politicians were being targeted while real mafias remained untouched.

Amid the heated debate and protests, the session was ultimately adjourned until Monday at 2:00 PM.
