PTI challenges 26th amendment in Supreme Court

ISLAMABAD: The PTI has challenged the 26th amendment to the constitution seeking its annulment in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

A position filed in the apex court by lawyers of the political party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan contended that parliament cannot change the basic structure of the constitution. It said that the independence of judiciary is a fundamental part of the constitution and no amendment can be made against the independence of the judiciary.

It added that the constitutional amendment is against the constitutional principle of distribution of powers. The PTI in its petition also sought a stay on the appointment of judges to the judicial commission till the verdict on the 26th constitutional amendment is delivered.

Earlier, 15 petitions were also filed in the Supreme Court against the 26th constitutional amendment.
