PTI’s intra-party election challenged in ECP

Akbar S. Babar's application says rules were violated in the polls held on Dec 2.

ISLAMABAD: A disgruntled founding member of the PTI has challenged the recent intra-party election in the the Election Commission of Pakistan.

In his application, Akbar S. Babar requested the commission to declare the December 2 intra-party election of the PTI null and void. 

He maintained the the rules and regulations about the polls, including submission of nomination papers, were openly violated.

Moreover, till the holding of the election, there was no mention of it on the official website of the PTI.

In the intra-party polls, Gohar Ali Khan was elected unopposed chairman of the PTI in place of Imran Khan who has been convicted in a Toshakhana case and is in jail.

The polls were conducted to meet the requirement of the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Chief election commissioner of the PTI Niazullah Niazi had said Umar Ayub Khan was also elected unopposed secretary general of the party.

Moreover, Dr Yasmin Rashid was elected as president of PTI Punjab and Ali Amin Gandapur as president of PTI Khyber Pakthunkhwa. 

Gohar Ali Khan said he would be working as the chairman of the PTI in place of Imran Khan until he is freed from jail where he is facing scores of cases.
