Punjab cabinet approves speedy trial courts

Special speedy trial courts will decide rape and child sexual assault cases.

LAHORE: Special speedy trial courts are being set up in Punjab for taking up and deciding on sexual and child assault cases in order to provide speedy justice to the victims and punish the culprits.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the provincial cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The chief minister said that though the speeding courts pulpetrators will be brought to justice without the cases lingering on.

The cabinet also decided to make changes to the defamation law to set a deadline for disposing of such cases.

Under the proposals, degrees would be announced in 90 days and the trial of the defamation cases would not last more than 180 days.

Child sexual assault and rape cases have seen a phenomenal increase in the province within the last a few years despite introduction of laws to check them.

Police say that due to loopholes in the criminal justice system, the culprits go scot-free and there is no respite from such cases.
