GILGIT: Heavy rain and landslides have blocked several sections of the Karakoram Highway in Upper Kohistan, disrupting road access between Gilgit-Baltistan and other cities of Pakistan.
According to officials, multiple points along the highway were closed due to landslides triggered by continuous rainfall. As a result, the region’s land connection with the rest of the country has been temporarily cut off.
Authorities said rescue and road-clearing operations are currently underway to restore traffic. The blockage has caused long queues of hundreds of passenger and cargo vehicles stranded along the route.
The district administration confirmed that 60 stranded travelers have been moved to a temporary shelter for safety.
Meanwhile, light rain has also begun in several areas of Khyber District after a long dry spell. The rainfall has lowered temperatures and made the weather cooler and more pleasant, bringing some relief to people observing the fast during Ramadan.
Officials are continuing efforts to reopen the blocked roads and restore normal transportation as soon as possible.
