ISLAMABAD: Heavy monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc across Pakistan, with eight more fatalities reported in the past 24 hours, raising the total death toll to 279, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The NDMA reported that 21 people were injured in rain-related incidents during the last day. Six of the new fatalities occurred in Punjab, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan each reported one death. All of the newly injured individuals are from Punjab.
Overall, Punjab has suffered the highest number of casualties with 151 deaths and 536 injuries. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reported 64 deaths and 80 injuries. In Sindh, 25 people have died and 40 have been injured, while Balochistan has reported 20 deaths and 4 injuries. Gilgit-Baltistan has recorded 9 deaths and 4 injuries.
Azad Kashmir has seen 2 deaths and 10 injuries, and in Islamabad, 8 people have died and 3 have been injured.
In the past 24 hours, 362 houses were damaged and 7 livestock animals perished due to the rain. Since the beginning of the monsoon season, a total of 1,553 homes have been damaged and 374 animals have died.
The NDMA continues to coordinate with provincial authorities to manage relief and rescue efforts across the affected areas.
