ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is commemorating the 28th anniversary of Youm-e-Takbeer with a renewed pledge to uphold its sovereignty and strengthen national defence, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the country’s unwavering resolve to counter all internal and external threats.

Youm-e-Takbeer is observed annually on May 28 to commemorate Pakistan’s successful nuclear tests conducted in Chagai, Balochistan, in 1998, in response to India’s nuclear explosions.

The historic tests made Pakistan the world’s seventh nuclear power and the first Muslim-majority country to achieve nuclear capability.

In a message issued on the occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, Dr Samar Mubarakmand, and the scientific community for their contributions to Pakistan’s nuclear programme.

The premier said Pakistan’s nuclear capability ensured an “impregnable defence” and prevented hostile forces from undermining the country’s sovereignty. He added that the nation’s armed forces remain fully prepared to defend every inch of the homeland.

Referring to regional tensions and security challenges, the prime minister said Pakistan would continue efforts to eliminate terrorism and extremism through ongoing security operations. He also warned that hostile elements should not remain under any misconception regarding Pakistan’s defence preparedness.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) also released a statement on behalf of the military leadership, including Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, the Air Chief, and the Naval Chief, congratulating the nation on Youm-e-Takbeer.

According to ISPR, May 28 symbolizes national unity, resilience, and Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining strategic balance in South Asia. The military leadership described the country’s nuclear and strategic capabilities as a “sacred national trust” and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace, stability, and effective deterrence.

The armed forces further stated that Pakistan’s nuclear achievement was the result of visionary leadership, the dedication of scientists and engineers, and the sacrifices of the armed forces and the nation.
