KARACHI: Early morning torrential rain in Karachi on Sunday put traffic in the city out of gear with water accumulating on roads and entering houses in low-lying areas.
Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab urged the citizens to avoid unnecessary travel as rainwater accumulated on main roads leading to gridlocks.
There were reports of people getting injured and one person dying due to wall and roof collapse in different parts of the city. Moreover, the rain also disrupted electricity supply and half of the city is without power.
The Met Office has said more rains were likely in the next 24 hours abd currently dark clouds are covering the sky.
The mayor told media that all staffers and machinery of the municipal corporation had been mobilized to clear roads abd residential areas of the rainwater and restore power and water supply.
Meanwhile, almost all political parties have suspended their election campaigns and in many areas election offices and venues of public gatherings were washed away by rainwater.
The MQM and Jamat Islami in their separate statements criticized the PPP government for the poor drainage systems and said local government in the city failed to deliver
