SC moved to block passage of constitutional package

Apex court requested to declare package illegal and against independence of judiciary.

ISLAMABAD: A petition was on Monday filed in the Supreme Court to block the passage of the constitutional package the government was planning to pass from parliament.

In the petition, Abid Zuberi, Shafqat Mahmood, Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan, Munir Kakar and others requested the court to declare the constitutional package illegal and against the independence of the judiciary and an interference in its working.

On the other hand, PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan said that the main objective behind the constitutional package was to keep him in jail.

Talking to journalists in the Adiala jail, he said that the rulers were afraid of the Supreme Court and that’s why they were amending the constitution to establish a separate constitutional court. He claimed that the so-called constitutional package would endanger the future of the country.

The jailed PTI leader said that the rulers have decided to destroy the judiciary for their own vested interest. All this is being done to conceal the election fraud and stick to power through illegal means.

It may be noted here that the constitutional package could not be presented in parliament on Sunday and Monday even though their sessions were called due to lack of the required numbers of members.
