Appeals of 19 convicts in May 9 attacks cases accepted: ISPR
RAWALPINDI: Pakistan army has announced that its court of appeal has revoked the prison sentences of 19 convicts in the May 9, 2023 arson attacks cases.
The ISPR in a statement said on Thursday that overall 67 convicts filed appeal against their sentences and 48 of these were sent to the court of appeals. The court of appeals accepted the appeals of 19 convicts in purely on humanitarian grounds, said the statement of the ISPR.
These 19 convicts will be released after completion of the set formalities, it added.
Earlier, in April 2024, as many as 24 convicts had also been released after the coMay 9 arsonurt of appeals accepted their requests.
It may be noted that over 100 supporters and activitsts of the PTI had been put in trial by the military courts after their arrest in the May 9 arson attacks cases. They were charged with attacking military installations during a protest against the arrest of PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan on May 9, 2023 in Islamabad in a corruption case.
The military courts last month sentenced over 70 of the arrested persons from two to 10 years imprisonment. The European Union, the British government and the United States have termed military trials of civilians a violations of international laws that Pakistan has committed to respect.
