Shafaq Mahmood from Kashmir becomes House of Lords member

LONDON: Liberal Democratic party leader Shafaq Mahmood, originally from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, has become lifetime member of Britain’s House of Lords.

According to media reports, Mahmood had come to Britain with his family at the age of four years and settled in Sheffield. Initially, he used to work as loader of goods from transport vehicle. He later worked in a store and became its youngest manager. He also earned a graduation degree in business from the Sheffield University.

Mahmood worked as a youth leader and helped youngsters in their higher education. He became member of the Sheffield Council in the the year 2011 as a leader of the Labour Democratic Group. 

In the year, 2015 the Queen of England awarded Mahmood with the title of MBE. In 2019, he was elected as a representative of Yorkshire in the European Parliament. He also headed the Career Commission from 2021 to 2022.
