Sharp Decline Seen in Indian Student Admissions in US
WASHINGTON: Admissions of Indian students to the United States have dropped by up to 75 percent following stricter immigration and visa policies introduced by the Trump administration, according to media reports.
The reports stated that obtaining a US visa has become increasingly difficult for Indian nationals, with higher rejection rates and tighter scrutiny, particularly for student and employment-based visas. These restrictions have significantly affected Indian students seeking higher education opportunities in the United States.
The visa rejection rate for Indian applicants has risen sharply as a result of tougher American policies.
The reports criticized the Indian government, saying that weaknesses in India’s foreign policy response have contributed to the worsening situation.
In a further development, the reports revealed that approximately 38,000 people were deported from the United States in 2025, with Indian nationals forming the largest group among those deported.
