ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has appealed to all the four provinces to help the government in stopping pilferage of electricity in order to streamline the system and provide relief to the consumers.

The Prime Minister made this appeal to the provinces while chairing a meeting attended by ministers and officials from the power and water divisions in Islamabad today.

Addressing the meeting, the Prime Minister said that stopping power pilferage, minimizing line losses and recovering dues were the main priorities of his government.

Mr Shahbaz told the meeting that new board members and chairmen of the power distribution companies had been appointed in a transparent manner and expressed the hope that this would bring a marked improvement to the working of the DISCOSE.

He also stressed the need that the provinces should provide police and revenue officials to the distribution companies in order to help them take action against those who were found involved in pilfering power.

The prime minister also issued direction for calling a meeting of the steering committee constituted to transfer agriculture tubewells in Balochistan to solar power in order to minimize power consumption.

Pakistan has for years been facing an acute crisis of electricity shortage mainly because of the phenomenal rise in usage abd the obsolete distribution system. The line losses have gone into billions of rupees every year and because of the poor transmission system there are lots of power losses. The poor distribution system also help unscrupulous elements to steal electricity.
