The storm struck the US capital and surrounding areas late Thursday night, with winds reaching up to 70 miles per hour. Winds of around 64 mph were also reported at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Fallen trees damaged homes and vehicles and blocked several roads. Near 5th and F Streets NE, a large tree fell onto a car, damaging the vehicle and blocking the road and sidewalk. DC Council member Charles Allen said residents in the area remained safe.

Authorities have been working to clear fallen trees and debris from affected areas while utility crews continue efforts to restore power.
