According to foreign media reports, Albania’s capital, Tirana, has witnessed violent clashes between police and protesters, leaving 51 police officers injured.
Angry demonstrators reportedly set fires in the streets and vandalised government buildings, police stations and shops. Several buildings, including the Ministry of Education, were also set ablaze.
The protests have spread to other cities across the country. Police responded by arresting 55 demonstrators.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has refused to step down but said he was willing to engage in dialogue over legitimate grievances, including the high cost of education.
Rama described the demonstrations as an attempt to obstruct Albania’s path towards membership in the European Union.
