Supreme Court orders closure of Monal Restaurant

Says commercial activities such as restaurants cannot be allowed in Margalla Hills National Park.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday ordered the closure of all restaurants, including Monal Restaurant, on the Margalla Hills National Park near Islamabad.

Hearing a case, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa said that commercial activities such as restaurants cannot be allowed in the national park area. The court directed to close the restaurants in three months.

The court said that the owners should be given preference in allocation of spaces for the eateries anywhere outside the limits of the national park, if available.

The court issued the order after a report was filed in response to a March 11 order in which it had sought record of land ownership of the Monal Restaurant.

A three-member bench of the apex court heard the petitions filed by Monal Restaurant and the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board.
