VANCOUVER: Switzerland defeated hosts Canada 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 to finish top of Group B and strengthen their position heading into the knockout stage.

The first half produced few clear-cut chances, although Switzerland looked the more threatening side. Captain Granit Xhaka made his 149th international appearance, while Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau denied a dangerous effort from Breel Embolo.

The match was effectively decided early in the second half. Ruben Vargas opened the scoring in the 46th minute, converting a cross from Johan Manzambi to give Switzerland the lead.

Just 11 minutes later, Manzambi doubled Switzerland’s advantage after a well-worked move in which Embolo’s hold-up play played a key role.

Canada responded in the 76th minute when substitute Promise David scored just 76 seconds after coming on, finishing off an impressive team move. However, the hosts were unable to find an equalizer.

With the victory, Switzerland secured first place in Group B and will face a third-placed team from Groups E, F, G, H, I or J in the knockout round on July 3 at the same stadium.

The result also earned Switzerland a unique milestone, making them only the third nation after Argentina and France to reach the first knockout round in four consecutive World Cup tournaments.

Despite the defeat, Canada qualified for the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history.

The Canadians, who finished second in the group, will face the runners-up of Group A in Los Angeles on June 28. By finishing second, Canada also lost its home advantage and will play all remaining tournament matches in the United States.
